It was festival time in our village, Thirunellai in Palakkad (Kerala, South India). Ladies in all houses draw geometric shapes using Rice Paste called Kolam. It is noteworthy that these are 200% environmentally friendly and act as a charity too. The small insects which otherwise left without food fed upon these.

Seen here is a young lady (my neighbour) playing with sunlight and insects that are having a feast upon the kolam.

V I S H U

Vishu, the festival celebrated in Kerala (South India) marks the first day of astronomical new year as per Malayalam Calendar. It is called Medam maasam (month).

On the day, malayalees (people from Kerala) wake up to see the Vishu Kani, which is prepared earlier day. With an idol of Lord Krishna in centre, the Kani gets its form with vegetables and fruits along with rice, Kani Konna (flower species: Cassia fistula).

Kani Konna is the regional flower of Kerala state.
